REVIEW - WEEK 1
The ENG YNPL Southern Conference finally got underway on December 5th. This league had been set to start in early November but because of the second national lockdown had to be postponed, but finally, ENG managed to conduct the first round of fixtures from our Southern Conference which also saw the return of fans which was a massive boost for the players and teams.
Ryland NC 47 Vs Maulden NC 3
Ryland NC showed no sign of lockdown cobwebs after they were in fine form against Maulden NC. Each quarter they grew in strength and with their defence stopping all attacks it allowed the midcourt and shooters to express themselves and play with absolute freedom with Ruby Broadhurst being one of the stand-out performers. Maulden NC did improve as the game wore on but this was a huge eye-opener on what to expect from this league.
Eagles NC 17 Vs Teignbridge Titans NC 19
This was an early treat for what to expect from this league with two really good competitive sides facing off in what was one of the ties of the day. Eagles NC flew into an early lead and looked fully in control throughout the first quarter going in at the break 6-2 in front. As the second quarter began Teignbridge Titans had obviously worked out a way of stopping the ball going into the Eagles goal shooter who was causing them serious problems in the opening quarter and was slowly but surely chipping away at Eagles lead. As we went into the final quarter Teignbridge Titans were only one goal behind and you could feel the tide was slowly turning towards a TTNC win. As the game ended it was TTNC who secured a narrow win in what was an entertaining fixture.
Poole NC 11 Vs Weston Park Blades 23
Weston Park Blades dominated the opening two-quarters of this game and went into half time with a very comfortable lead. Poole NC managed to get going after the break and started to have some success and got some goals on the board. Weston Park Blades though who used their lead to get players on the court regularly using our roll on roll off system finished strong and recorded their first win.
Magic NC 27 Vs Abbey Flyers Nomads 7
Magic NC performed a defensive masterclass to dominate the opening two quarters against an Abbey Flyers Nomads team who looked intimidated by their physical appearance. Once Abbey Flyers Nomads found the confidence to play they were on top in the 3rd quarter and their GS scored one of the goals of the game with a superb shot that lifted the watching fans. In the end, though Magic NC was fully deserving of their victory.
Eagles NC 36 Vs Starz NC 10
A slow start from Starz NC saw Eagles fly into an early lead. This was a similar type of performance from Starz NC who managed to qualify for this league after a narrow win against Weston Park Blades in a similar vein of form. Eagles though would not be as generous as WPB and they stubbornly didn't allow Starz NC to get themselves back into the game and ended up convincing winners.
Teignbridge Titans 27 Vs Ryland NC 14
A solid performance from Teignbridge Titans who were consistent through-out this game. TTNC started well and took a solid lead going into the second quarter with Sophie Lock shooting well. Ryland NC rallied in the second quarter and managed to bring back the score to 14-11. TTNC though upped a gear in the 3rd and 4th quarters to make a long journey home a little more bearable with a great debut win in this league.
Sutton Town NC 8 Poole NC 41
After being in lockdown for 5 weeks the last thing you want is to play one of the best teams in the country and unfortunately for Sutton Town, this is what they were up against. Poole NC U13 who was the U12 team that won the ENG U12 Netball Cup National Finals came into this game with a fierce reputation and they definitely lived up to that reputation which a quite breathtaking performance which showcased the level teams will have to reach in order to compete with them. Sutton Town gave it their best shot but the decisive aspect of the game was the ruthlessness of Poole NC defence with Martha Vujicic being one of the stand out performers for Poole NC.
CD Phoenix 27 NC Vs Turnford NC 37
This was a fantastic game between two really good teams whom both came into the game missing players but still served up an incredible spectacle for everyone in attendance. CD Phoenix started the better of the two teams and went into the second quarter two goals ahead. As the second quarter started CD Phoenix were still on top and missed a glorious opportunity to go into half time another two goals ahead when their goal shooter missed what was a simple shot. This kind of turned the tide and Turnford managed to draw level before half time. An injury to CD Phoenix star player Martha Robinson in the 3rd quarter gave Turnford more confidence and they took full advantage going into the last quarter two goals ahead. CD Phoenix needed a big performance in the final quarter and had Martha Robinson back to help with getting back into the tie. Turnford though went through the gears and ended up winning. A score that looked convincing but was far from it.
