Sutton Town was crowned the No.1 team of the 2025/26 U14 Youth Netball Premier League season after an outstanding performance in the Grand Finals. They had to fend off three tough encounters to win this event for the second time in the club’s history.
Their first game was against Wyre, and there wasn’t much history between the two teams, so it was going to be interesting to see how the opening quarters would play out.
Wyre nearly caused a shock in last season’s competition, nearly defeating the eventual winners Wodson Park. Sutton Town had to be wary of this and faced a tough challenge throughout the game. At half-time, the score was tied at 13-13, and Wyre posed a real threat to eliminating Sutton Town’s chances of success in this event.
As the game entered the third quarter, Sutton Town pulled away and kept pulling away in the fourth. A spirited Wyre side did mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, and some Super Shots from Sophie Cudlip gave Sutton Town something to think about in what was a nervy ending. In the end, though, they won the tie 26-21 and were through to the semi-finals.
Their semi-final tie saw them take on Ellesmere Port, a game played out on multiple occasions over the years. Ellesmere Port themselves came through a tough quarter-final game against Shan, so both teams had exerted maximum energy before this tie began.
Ellesmere Port started strongly and was ahead by several goals in the early stages of the first quarter. Sutton Town, though, showed their maturity in battle and didn’t panic; once they settled, they found their form and stopped Ellesmere Port taking a big lead into the second quarter.
Ellesmere Port maintained their lead in the second quarter and managed to extend their lead to four points as the half-time whistle blew. Sutton Town needed a big third quarter, and that is what was delivered by the West Midlands side. A score of 8-3 in the third quarter meant they went into the final quarter one point ahead.
In the final quarter, Sutton Town controlled the game and finally put the brakes on what was a free-flowing Ellemere Port side in the opening two quarters. They won the game 23-19 and were going to face Wodson Park in the final.
The final was an absolute classic, and it was between Wodson Park, who were last season’s national champions, and Sutton Town, the current league champions.
Each quarter of this game was neck and neck, with Wodson Park edging each one in terms of scoreline. This Sutton Town team, a year ago, would have potentially folded against this level of pressure, but this season, Sutton Town is a different animal after a season of having to deal with injuries to key players and a loss of half their squad in Round 4, and still managing to win all their games.
As the game headed into the final quarter, the score was 17-16 to Wodson Park. The final quarter saw both teams give everything to become this season’s No.1 team, and it was Sutton Town who managed to go ahead for the first time in the game, thanks to the incredible shooting of Emily Connell. Wodson were now under pressure to respond, but Sutton Town held strong in the final few minutes to claim the YNPL Grand Finals title.
This victory was not only a testament to the hard work this particular Sutton Town team has put in over the past few years, but also a testament to how they have developed mentally as a team. All in all, this season, they went thirteen games unbeaten to win both league and national titles.
